What it is used for

Iron sucrose is used to treat iron deficiency anaemia when iron tablets or syrup cannot be used, have not worked or are not tolerated, or when iron needs to be replaced quickly. It is commonly used in people with chronic kidney disease, including those on dialysis. Doctors also use it in some people with inflammatory bowel disease, after heavy blood loss, and later in pregnancy when anaemia is significant.

How it works

Iron sucrose delivers iron directly into the bloodstream. The body takes it up into its iron stores and uses it to make haemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen.
