What it is used for

Ferrous sulfate is used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anaemia, which can cause tiredness, weakness, pale skin and shortness of breath. The syrup form is useful for children and for adults who find tablets hard to swallow. It is used when growth, pregnancy, heavy periods, blood loss or a poor diet leave the body short of iron.

The most common side effects are stomach pain, nausea, constipation or diarrhoea, and dark or black stools, which are harmless. Liquid iron can stain the teeth, but this can usually be brushed away.

  • Milk, tea, coffee and antacids reduce iron absorption; take the syrup apart from them.
