What it is used for

This combination is used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anaemia together with low folate, especially during pregnancy and after childbirth, when the body's needs rise. It is also used after blood loss, for example from heavy periods, and when the diet lacks these nutrients. The added zinc helps correct or prevent zinc deficiency.

How it works

Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in red blood cells, and folic acid helps the body make healthy new cells, including red blood cells and the baby's developing spine and brain in early pregnancy. Zinc supports growth, immunity and wound healing.

Important safety information

Common side effects

Common side effects include dark or black stools, which are harmless, as well as constipation, nausea, stomach pain and diarrhoea. Taking it with food can reduce stomach upset, though food may lower how much iron is absorbed.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first

  • People with thalassaemia or thalassaemia trait, unless tests show they also lack iron
  • Anyone with an iron overload condition such as haemochromatosis, or who has regular blood transfusions
  • People with stomach ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease or other long-term gut problems
  • Anyone with low vitamin B12, as folic acid can hide the signs of B12 deficiency
  • Anyone taking antacids, acid reducers, thyroid medicine or antibiotics such as tetracyclines or quinolones

Warnings

  • Keep it out of sight and reach of children; an iron overdose can be fatal for a young child, so get emergency help if a child swallows any.
  • Black stools are expected, but seek help for black, sticky stools with stomach pain, or for vomiting blood.
  • Tea, coffee, milk and antacids can reduce iron absorption; leave a gap between them and this supplement.
  • Not every anaemia is caused by a lack of iron; a blood test helps your doctor find the cause.

Questions people ask

Why do iron supplements turn stools black?

Some of the iron is not absorbed and passes through the gut, colouring the stool dark green or black. This is expected and harmless, but black, tarry stools with stomach pain or dizziness should be checked by a doctor.

Can I take iron if I have thalassaemia trait?

Thalassaemia trait can cause small red blood cells that look like iron deficiency, but iron does not correct it. Iron should be taken only if tests show you also lack iron, so ask your doctor to check before starting.

Why are iron and folic acid given in pregnancy?

Pregnancy increases the need for iron and folate, and a lack of either can cause anaemia in the mother. Folic acid in early pregnancy also lowers the risk of certain birth defects of the baby's spine and brain.
