What it is used for
Erythromycin is used for bacterial infections of the chest, throat, skin and soft tissues, and it is often an alternative for people who are allergic to penicillin. It is also used for whooping cough, some sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, and certain gut infections. It is sometimes used for acne.
How it works
Erythromycin binds to ribosomes, the parts of a bacterial cell that build proteins, and stops the bacteria from growing and multiplying. This gives the immune system time to clear the infection.
