What it is used for
Doxycycline is used for a wide range of bacterial infections, including chest infections, some sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, and infections spread by ticks and mites, such as scrub typhus. It is also used for cholera and leptospirosis, for acne and rosacea, and to prevent malaria in travellers to some areas.
How it works
Doxycycline attaches to the protein-making machinery inside bacteria and blocks it, which stops them from multiplying. The immune system can then clear the remaining bacteria.

Common side effects include nausea, stomach upset, diarrhoea and increased sensitivity to sunlight, which can lead to sunburn. If a capsule sticks in the throat, it can cause painful irritation or ulcers of the food pipe. Thrush can also occur.
