What it is used for
This antibiotic combination, also called co-trimoxazole, is used for certain bacterial infections, such as some urinary tract infections, flare-ups of chronic bronchitis and some gut infections, when the bacteria are likely to respond. It is also an important medicine for treating and preventing Pneumocystis pneumonia, a serious lung infection in people with a weakened immune system, such as people living with HIV. Doctors may also use it for some skin infections and other less common infections.
How it works
The two medicines block two different steps in the way bacteria make folic acid, which they need to grow and multiply. Working together, they stop the bacteria more effectively than either one alone.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and a mild skin rash. Less often it can raise potassium levels or affect blood cell counts, particularly with long use. Rarely, it causes serious skin reactions that need urgent treatment.
