What it is used for

Doxophylline is used to relieve and prevent narrowing of the airways in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis. It is used as a long-term maintenance treatment to ease breathlessness, wheeze and chest tightness. It is not used to relieve a sudden asthma attack.

How it works

Doxophylline relaxes the muscles around the airways, helping them to open. It is thought to affect the heart and stomach less than theophylline, so it may cause fewer side effects.
