What it is used for
Montelukast is used to help prevent asthma symptoms and attacks, usually alongside an inhaler, in adults and children. It can prevent narrowing of the airways triggered by exercise. It is also used to relieve allergic rhinitis (hay fever), such as sneezing and a blocked or runny nose, although doctors usually try other treatments first.
How it works
Montelukast blocks leukotrienes, chemicals released in the airways during an allergic reaction. Leukotrienes cause swelling, tightening of the airways and extra mucus.

- Do not stop or reduce inhaled steroid treatment unless your doctor tells you to.
