What it is used for
Ketotifen taken by mouth is used to help prevent allergic symptoms, such as sneezing and a runny nose from allergic rhinitis, hives and itchy skin, and allergic eye irritation. In some countries, including Bangladesh, it is also used as an add-on to help prevent asthma symptoms, especially in children. It works slowly and does not treat an asthma attack.
How it works
Ketotifen blocks histamine, a chemical that causes allergy symptoms, and helps stabilise mast cells so they release fewer allergy chemicals. Its full preventive effect builds up over several weeks.
