What it is used for
Salbutamol is used to relieve wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and breathlessness in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It can also be used before exercise to prevent exercise-induced wheeze. Inhaled forms act fastest, while the nebuliser solution and injection are used for more severe attacks under medical supervision.
How it works
Salbutamol stimulates beta-2 receptors on the muscles around the airways, making them relax. This opens the airways within minutes and makes breathing easier for a few hours.

Common side effects
Common side effects include shaky hands (tremor), a fast or pounding heartbeat, headache, nervousness and muscle cramps. These are more likely with tablets, syrup or large amounts than with an inhaler, and usually pass quickly.

- If you need your reliever more often than usual, or it helps less, your asthma may be getting worse; see a doctor soon.
- Call for emergency help if breathlessness is severe, you cannot speak in full sentences, your lips turn blue, or the reliever gives little or no relief.
- Rarely, breathing gets worse straight after using it; if this happens, stop and seek medical help at once.
- Salbutamol relieves symptoms but does not treat airway inflammation; do not stop a preventer medicine without talking to your doctor.
