What it is used for

This injection is used for short-term relief of moderate to severe pain with inflammation, such as sudden back pain, muscle and joint pain, pain after injury or surgery, and colic from kidney stones. It is given into a large muscle by a doctor or nurse. The lidocaine is included to reduce pain from the injection itself.

How it works

Diclofenac blocks enzymes (COX) that make prostaglandins, chemicals that cause pain, swelling and fever. Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic that briefly numbs the area where the injection is given.
