What it is used for

Cefepime is a hospital antibiotic given by injection or drip to treat serious bacterial infections. These include pneumonia, complicated urinary tract and kidney infections, skin infections, and abdominal infections (usually together with another antibiotic). It is also used for fever in people with very low white blood cell counts, such as during cancer treatment.

How it works

Cefepime stops bacteria from building their cell walls, so the bacteria break down and die. It works against a wide range of bacteria, including some hard-to-treat hospital germs.

Common side effects include pain or swelling at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, rash and headache. Rarely, especially in people with kidney problems, it can affect the brain and cause confusion, unusual movements or seizures.
