What it is used for
Ceftriaxone is an injected antibiotic used for serious bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, meningitis, blood infections, kidney infections and infections inside the abdomen. In Bangladesh it is widely used for typhoid (enteric fever), and it is also used for gonorrhoea, bone and joint infections, and to prevent infection around some operations. It is chosen when an infection is severe or when medicines by mouth are not suitable.
How it works
Ceftriaxone kills bacteria by stopping them from building their cell walls. It is given into a vein or a muscle by a trained health professional and stays in the body for a long time, so injections are spaced well apart.

Common side effects include pain, swelling or hardness where the injection is given, diarrhoea, rash and changes in blood test results. Rarely, it can form a sludge in the gallbladder that may cause stomach pain. Most people tolerate it well.
