What it is used for

Bromhexine is used to loosen thick, sticky mucus (phlegm) in chest conditions such as acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis. Thinner mucus is easier to cough up, which can make a chesty cough feel less heavy. It is meant for a wet or productive cough, not a dry, tickly cough.

How it works

Bromhexine breaks down the fibres that make mucus thick and increases the watery part of the mucus. This makes it easier for the airways to clear. The body changes part of bromhexine into ambroxol, which works in a similar way.
