What it is used for

Tranexamic acid is used to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and to control bleeding in several other situations. These include nosebleeds, bleeding after a tooth extraction in people with bleeding disorders, and bleeding during or after surgery or injury. In hospital, the injection is also used for heavy bleeding after childbirth and serious injuries. It is also used to help prevent attacks of hereditary angioedema.

How it works

Tranexamic acid stops the body from breaking down blood clots too quickly. It blocks the process that dissolves fibrin, the protein mesh that holds a clot together, so clots stay in place for longer.
