What it is used for
Silver sulfadiazine cream is used to prevent and treat infection in burns, especially deeper burns that damage more than the top layer of skin. It is also used on some other wounds at risk of infection, such as leg ulcers, pressure sores and skin graft sites. It is usually used under the care of a doctor or nurse.
How it works
The cream slowly releases silver, which damages the cell wall and membrane of bacteria and yeasts. This helps stop germs from growing on damaged skin while it heals.

Common side effects
The most common effects are burning, itching or pain where the cream is applied. Some people develop an allergic skin rash. When used over large areas, it can occasionally cause grey or brown skin discolouration or a temporary fall in white blood cells.

Warnings
- Large, deep or electrical burns, and burns on the face, hands, feet or genitals, need urgent medical care. Cool a burn under cool running water first; do not rely on a cream alone.
- Stop using it and see a doctor if you get a spreading rash, blistering, fever or sore throat.
- Keep it away from the eyes and mouth.
