What it is used for

Desloratadine is used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and itchy, watery eyes, whether seasonal (hay fever) or year-round, for example from dust mites. It is also used to relieve itching and rash in hives (urticaria).

How it works

Desloratadine blocks H1 histamine receptors, stopping histamine released during an allergic reaction from causing symptoms. It is the active substance that loratadine turns into in the body, and very little enters the brain, so it rarely causes drowsiness.
