What it is used for

Bilastine is used to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, a runny or itchy nose and itchy, watery eyes, whether seasonal or year-round. It is also used for urticaria (hives), an itchy raised rash. It is used in adults and, in forms suited to their age, in children.

How it works

Bilastine blocks the effect of histamine, a chemical released during an allergic reaction that causes itching, sneezing and swelling. It does not easily enter the brain, so it is less likely to cause sleepiness than older antihistamines.

Bilastine is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are headache, drowsiness, dizziness and tiredness, which are usually mild.

Warnings

  • Get urgent help for swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing, as these may be signs of a severe allergic reaction.
