What it is used for
This combination is used for bacterial infections of the chest, sinuses, throat and ears, such as bronchitis flare-ups, sinusitis, tonsillitis and middle ear infections. It is also used for some urinary tract and skin infections. Clavulanic acid is added to help treat infections caused by bacteria that can resist cefuroxime on its own.
How it works
Cefuroxime damages the cell wall that bacteria need to survive. Clavulanic acid blocks beta-lactamases, enzymes some bacteria make to break down antibiotics, so cefuroxime can keep working.
