What it is used for
Tofacitinib is used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and ulcerative colitis. It is usually prescribed when other treatments, such as methotrexate or biologic medicines, have not worked well enough or are not suitable. It is started and monitored by a specialist.
How it works
Tofacitinib blocks Janus kinase (JAK) enzymes, which pass signals inside immune cells. This calms the overactive immune response that causes inflammation in the joints or bowel.

Questions people ask
Do I need a TB test before starting tofacitinib?
Yes, doctors usually check for tuberculosis and hepatitis before starting, because tofacitinib can allow these infections to become active. Treatment for hidden (latent) TB may be needed first.
Why do I need blood tests while taking tofacitinib?
It can lower white and red blood cell counts, affect the liver and raise cholesterol. Regular tests help your specialist spot problems early.
