What it is used for

Prednisolone is used to calm inflammation and an overactive immune system in many conditions. These include flare-ups of asthma and COPD, severe allergic reactions, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions, inflammatory bowel disease and some severe skin conditions. It is also used for autoimmune conditions such as lupus, for some kidney conditions such as nephrotic syndrome, and as part of treatment for some blood cancers.

How it works

Prednisolone is a man-made version of cortisol, a hormone made by the adrenal glands. It switches off many of the chemical signals that cause swelling, redness and pain, and damps down the immune system.

Common side effects

Short courses may cause increased appetite, indigestion, trouble sleeping and mood changes such as restlessness or low mood. Longer use can raise blood sugar and blood pressure, cause weight gain, thin the bones, increase the risk of infections and lead to eye problems such as cataracts.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first

  • People with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure or glaucoma
  • Anyone with an infection, including tuberculosis (TB) now or in the past, or who has never had chickenpox or measles
  • People with a stomach ulcer, thin bones (osteoporosis), or a history of depression or other mental health problems
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Parents of children who need it for a long time, as it can affect growth
  • Anyone taking NSAID painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin, blood thinners or diabetes medicines

Warnings

  • Do not stop suddenly after taking it for more than a few weeks. Your body may have stopped making enough of its own steroid hormone, so your doctor will usually reduce it gradually.
  • Seek medical advice quickly if you have not had chickenpox or measles and come into contact with someone who has it, as these infections can be severe while taking steroids.
