What it is used for

Hyoscine butylbromide relieves painful cramps and spasms of the stomach and bowel, including the cramping of irritable bowel syndrome. The injection is used by health professionals for sudden spasms such as colic from kidney stones or gallstones, and to relax the gut during some scans and procedures. It eases cramping pain but does not treat the underlying cause.

How it works

It blocks the action of acetylcholine on the smooth muscle of the gut and the urinary and bile ducts, so the muscle relaxes and spasms ease. It does not easily enter the brain, so it seldom causes drowsiness.
