What it is used for

Gabapentin is used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), such as pain after shingles (postherpetic neuralgia) and nerve pain caused by diabetes. It is also used to treat epilepsy, mainly focal seizures, either on its own or with other epilepsy medicines.

How it works

Gabapentin attaches to calcium channels on nerve cells and reduces the release of chemical messengers that carry pain signals and trigger seizures. It calms overactive nerves rather than acting like an ordinary painkiller.

Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, unsteadiness and weight gain. Some people have swollen ankles, blurred vision or a dry mouth. Side effects are often worse at first and may improve over time.
