What it is used for
Pregabalin is used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), such as pain from diabetic nerve damage, pain that continues after shingles, and nerve pain after spinal cord injury. It is also used for fibromyalgia in some countries and for generalised anxiety disorder in others. In epilepsy, it is added to other medicines to help control focal (partial) seizures.
How it works
Pregabalin attaches to part of the calcium channels on overactive nerve cells. This reduces the release of chemical messengers that carry pain signals and calms nerve activity in the brain and spinal cord.
