What it is used for
Levetiracetam is used to treat epilepsy. It can be used on its own or with other epilepsy medicines for focal (partial-onset) seizures, and alongside other medicines for myoclonic seizures (sudden jerks) and generalised tonic-clonic seizures. The injection is used in hospital when someone cannot take it by mouth.
How it works
Levetiracetam binds to a protein called SV2A at nerve endings in the brain. This is thought to calm the excess electrical activity that leads to seizures.
