What it is used for
Baclofen is used to reduce muscle stiffness and spasms (spasticity) caused by conditions of the brain and spinal cord, such as multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, stroke or brain injury. By easing stiffness, it can make movement, sitting, sleeping and daily care easier. It is not usually effective for ordinary muscle strain or back pain.
How it works
Baclofen acts on GABA-B receptors in the spinal cord, reducing the nerve signals that make muscles tighten. This relaxes stiff muscles and reduces painful spasms.

Common side effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, tiredness, nausea and confusion. They are more likely at the start of treatment and in older adults, and often improve as the body adjusts. In some people, too much relaxation of the muscles can make walking or standing harder.
