What this package is for
Allergy screen
This is a simple two-test panel for a first look at allergy. Total IgE measures the overall level of the antibody that drives allergic reactions, and a complete blood count includes the share of eosinophils, white cells that often increase in allergy. It helps your doctor judge whether symptoms are likely to be allergic before deciding on further testing.
Who this package is for
- You have seasonal or year-round sneezing and nasal symptoms
- Your skin is often itchy or dry, or breaks out in hives
- Your child has eczema, wheeze or other signs of an allergic tendency (atopy)
- Your doctor wants a simple first test before considering specific allergy tests
How to prepare
Fasting: Needed; you are told how long to fast when you book, and plain water is fine.
Fasting is needed before this sample; you are told how long to fast when you book, and plain water is allowed. Keep taking your usual medicines, including antihistamines and inhalers, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Let your doctor know if you have recently taken steroid tablets.
At home
- Sample
- Blood sample
- How it works
- Book a morning slot so the sample can be taken before you eat. The collector draws a small amount of blood from a vein in your arm, which takes a few minutes, and both tests are run on it. For a young child, a parent can hold them comfortably during the draw.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
A high total IgE together with raised eosinophils suggests an allergic tendency, such as allergic rhinitis, eczema or allergic asthma. Worm infections and some skin and immune conditions can raise the same markers, and some people with real allergies have a normal total IgE. This panel does not show which substance you react to. Your doctor will interpret the results in the light of your symptoms and history.

Questions people ask
What is atopy?
Atopy is an inherited tendency to develop allergic conditions such as eczema, hay fever and allergic asthma. People with atopy often have a higher total IgE.
How is this panel different from the allergy screen?
This panel includes total IgE and a blood count. The allergy screen package also adds a separate total circulating eosinophil count, which gives a more exact eosinophil figure.
Can a normal IgE rule out allergy?
No. Some people with clear allergic reactions to a specific food, insect sting or medicine have a normal total IgE. If your symptoms suggest a particular trigger, your doctor may order specific IgE tests.
Is this test suitable for children?
Yes. Total IgE and blood counts are often used in children with eczema, wheeze or recurring nasal symptoms, and children's results are compared with ranges for their age.
