What this package is for
Diabetes check
This package is designed to check for diabetes or to review how well known diabetes is controlled. It measures blood sugar before and after a meal, HbA1c for your average sugar over the past two to three months, serum creatinine to check the kidneys, and a routine urine test, which can show sugar or protein in the urine. Together they give your doctor a picture of both sugar control and early effects on the kidneys.
Who this package is for
- You have diabetes and need your regular review
- You have symptoms such as thirst, passing urine often, tiredness or weight loss
- You have a family history of diabetes, are overweight or had diabetes in pregnancy
- Your doctor wants to see how your sugar responds to a meal as well as before it
How to prepare
Fasting: Needed for Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS): have the sample taken before breakfast, and follow the instructions you get when you book.
This package includes a fasting sugar and an after-meal sugar, so the timing of your meals matters. Follow the preparation shown on this page and any instructions you receive when booking about when to eat. Keep taking your diabetes medicines as your doctor has prescribed, and ask your doctor how to take them around the test if you are unsure.

- Sample
- Blood and urine samples
- How it works
- The collector takes a first blood sample from a vein in your arm and collects your urine container. A second blood sample for the after-meal sugar is taken at the time given when you book, usually counted from when you start eating. Each draw takes a few minutes.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
Raised fasting or after-meal sugar and a high HbA1c can point to prediabetes or diabetes, or show that existing diabetes needs better control. Sugar in the urine usually appears only when blood sugar is quite high, and protein in the urine or a raised creatinine can be an early sign of kidney strain. A new diagnosis of diabetes usually needs confirming with a repeat test. Your doctor will interpret the results and discuss any changes to your care.
