What it is used for
This supplement is mainly used by people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that affects central vision in older adults. In people with intermediate AMD, or advanced AMD in one eye, a similar combination of vitamins and minerals was shown in large studies to lower the chance of the disease getting worse. It does not cure AMD or bring back lost vision.
How it works
Vitamin C and vitamin E are antioxidants, and zinc is needed for healthy retina cells; together they help protect the retina from damage. Lutein collects in the macula, the centre of the retina, where it helps filter harmful blue light, and copper is added because zinc can lower copper levels.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first
- Anyone taking a blood thinner, as vitamin E may add to the risk of bleeding
- People who already take a multivitamin or zinc supplement, to avoid taking too much
- People with kidney disease
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Anyone who has not had an eye examination, since only some eye conditions benefit
Warnings
- See an eye doctor promptly if straight lines look wavy, or if you notice a blurred or dark patch in the centre of your vision.
- This supplement does not replace eye examinations or treatments such as eye injections for wet AMD.
- Do not take extra zinc or vitamin supplements alongside it unless your doctor agrees, as high amounts of some vitamins and minerals can cause harm.
Questions people ask
Can eye vitamins prevent macular degeneration?
There is no good evidence that these supplements prevent AMD in people who do not have it. Their proven benefit is in slowing progression in people who already have intermediate or advanced AMD, as found by an eye doctor.
Do eye vitamins help cataracts or tired eyes?
Large studies have not shown that this type of supplement prevents or treats cataracts. Eye strain, dryness and tired eyes have other causes, so ask an eye doctor about them.
Can I get these nutrients from food?
Green leafy vegetables such as spinach are good sources of lutein, and fruit, vegetables, nuts and fish provide the other nutrients. A healthy diet is good for the eyes, but the amounts in eye supplements are hard to get from food alone.
