What it is used for
Levothyroxine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), when the thyroid gland does not make enough hormone. It is also used after thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment, and in some types of goitre and thyroid cancer. Most people who need it for an underactive thyroid take it for life.
How it works
Levothyroxine is a man-made copy of thyroxine (T4), the main hormone made by the thyroid gland. The body converts it into its active form, which controls energy use, heart rate, body temperature and many other processes.

Common side effects
When the amount is right, most people have no side effects. Too much can cause symptoms of an overactive thyroid, such as a fast or irregular heartbeat, shakiness, sweating, feeling hot, diarrhoea, weight loss, anxiety and trouble sleeping.

- People with diabetes, adrenal gland problems or osteoporosis
- Anyone taking iron, calcium, antacids or acid-reducing medicines, which can reduce absorption

Warnings
- Iron, calcium, antacids and some acid-reducing medicines stop levothyroxine being absorbed properly, so keep them for a different time of day.
- Never use levothyroxine to lose weight. In people with normal thyroid function it does not help and can cause dangerous heart effects.
- Seek medical help for chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or severe shakiness.
- Regular blood tests (TSH) check that the amount is right. If your tablets look different from usual, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
