What this package is for
Sexually transmitted infections
This package tests the blood for several sexually transmitted infections. It includes two syphilis tests, VDRL and TPHA, which work together to screen for and confirm syphilis, as well as tests for HIV, hepatitis B by ELISA and hepatitis C. It also includes a chlamydia IgG antibody test, which shows whether the body has met chlamydia at some point.
Who this package is for
- You have had sex without a condom or with a new or casual partner
- A past or current partner has told you they have an infection
- You have noticed a painless sore or an unexplained rash
- Your doctor has found one sexually transmitted infection and wants to check for others
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
You do not need to fast or prepare in any special way. Some infections take weeks to become detectable after exposure, so if the exposure was very recent, ask a doctor whether to test now, later or both. If you have been treated for syphilis before, tell your doctor, as some syphilis tests stay positive after treatment.

- How it works
- A collector comes to your home and discreetly takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm. One draw is enough for all the tests in the package and takes a few minutes.
- Report
- Within 5 days of collection.
What the results can mean
A reactive VDRL with a positive TPHA usually points to syphilis, either current or treated in the past, and your doctor will work out which. A reactive HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C result is confirmed with further tests before any diagnosis. A positive chlamydia IgG shows past or present exposure but does not confirm a current infection. Your doctor will interpret the results in confidence and advise on treatment and partner testing.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between VDRL and TPHA?
VDRL is a screening test that usually falls after successful treatment, so it helps judge whether syphilis is active. TPHA detects antibodies to the syphilis bacterium itself and usually stays positive for life, even after cure.
Can a blood test diagnose a current chlamydia infection?
Not reliably. A chlamydia IgG blood test shows that you have been exposed at some time. A current genital infection is usually diagnosed with a urine sample or swab tested by PCR, which your doctor may suggest.
Do sexually transmitted infections always cause symptoms?
No. Chlamydia, syphilis, HIV and hepatitis B and C can all stay silent for months or years, so testing after any possible exposure is the reliable way to find them.
Should my partner be tested too?
Yes. If you have an infection, recent partners should be told and tested so they can be treated and you are not reinfected. Your doctor can advise how to do this.
