What this package is for
Dengue detection & platelet count
This package combines three blood tests used when dengue is suspected. The NS1 antigen test detects part of the dengue virus and is most useful in the first days of fever, while a rapid card (ICT) test for IgM and IgG antibodies picks up the body's response later in the illness and can show a previous dengue infection. A complete blood count checks the platelet count and haematocrit, which doctors watch closely during dengue.
Who this package is for
- You have a sudden high fever with headache, pain behind the eyes, or body and joint aches
- There is dengue in your area or household, especially during the monsoon season
- You have had fever for a few days and your doctor wants to confirm or rule out dengue
- Your doctor wants a first platelet count to compare with repeat tests
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
There is no need to fast; keep drinking fluids as usual. Tell your doctor about any medicines you have taken for the fever. If you think you may have dengue, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking any pain reliever, as some, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can increase the risk of bleeding in dengue.
At home
- Sample
- Blood sample
- How it works
- Home collection lets you stay resting while a trained collector takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm, which takes a few minutes. The same sample is used for the dengue tests and the blood count. If your doctor wants the blood count repeated over the following days, you can book it again.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
A positive NS1 or IgM result supports a current dengue infection, while a positive IgG on its own usually points to a past infection, which can make a new dengue infection more severe. A negative NS1 later in the illness does not rule dengue out. A falling platelet count or a rising haematocrit needs close follow-up. Your doctor will interpret the results with the day of your fever and how you feel.

- Dengue NS1 AntigenThe dengue NS1 test looks for NS1, a protein made by the dengue virus, in the blood.
- Dengue IgM and IgG AntibodiesThis test looks for two types of antibodies that the body makes against the dengue virus.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC)A complete blood count looks at the three main types of cells in your blood: red blood cells, which carry oxygen; white blood cells, which fight infection; and platelets, which help blood to clot.
- Platelet CountPlatelets are tiny cell fragments in the blood that help it clot and stop bleeding.
Questions people ask
When should I get a dengue test after the fever starts?
NS1 is most useful in the first few days of fever, while antibodies usually appear from around the fifth day. Testing both, as this package does, covers the early and later stages of the illness.
What are the warning signs of severe dengue?
Severe tummy pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, extreme tiredness or restlessness, and cold, clammy skin. These often appear as the fever settles and need urgent hospital care.
What does a positive dengue IgG mean?
It means you have had dengue at some time. If IgM and NS1 are negative, the current fever may have another cause, but your doctor will decide based on the timing of your symptoms.
Why does the platelet count matter in dengue?
Dengue often lowers platelets, the cells that help blood clot. Doctors repeat the count to follow the trend, together with the haematocrit, which rises when fluid leaks out of the blood vessels.
