This program is for men and women preparing for marriage and focuses on inherited blood disorders and infections. Haemoglobin electrophoresis looks for thalassaemia and haemoglobin E carrier status, and the package screens for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis. It also includes an anti-HBs test, which shows whether you are protected against hepatitis B, for example after vaccination, so a partner who is not protected can be vaccinated.

How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
There is nothing special to prepare, and you can eat and drink as normal. Keep taking any regular medicines. If you have had a blood transfusion in recent months, let your doctor know, since donor blood can affect the haemoglobin electrophoresis. If you have had the hepatitis B vaccine, it helps to know roughly when.

What the results can mean
If both partners are carriers of thalassaemia or haemoglobin E, their children could inherit a serious blood disorder, and a doctor can explain the choices available.
