What this test is for
Blood sugar at any time
A random blood sugar test measures the glucose in your blood at any time of day, whenever you last ate. It is a quick way to check for high blood sugar, especially if you have symptoms of diabetes. Because it does not need fasting, it is useful when a fasting sample is not practical.
Why a doctor may order it
- If you have symptoms of high blood sugar, such as thirst, passing urine often or blurred vision
- As a quick screening check for diabetes
- To check sugar levels when you feel unwell or during an illness
- To spot-check blood sugar in people with known diabetes
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
You can eat and drink as usual. Note the time of your last meal and tell the collector, since sugar levels are naturally higher after eating. Keep taking your usual medicines unless your doctor has advised otherwise.
At home
- Sample
- Blood sample
- How it works
- The collector comes to your home at a time that suits you and takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm. It takes a few minutes, and there is no need to plan meals around the visit.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
The report shows your blood glucose next to the laboratory's reference range for a random sample. A clearly high result, especially with symptoms, can suggest diabetes, while a result near the upper limit may need a fasting sugar or HbA1c to clarify. A single random result cannot rule diabetes in or out. Your doctor will interpret it together with the time of your last meal and your symptoms.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between random and fasting blood sugar?
Random blood sugar can be taken at any time, whatever you have eaten. Fasting blood sugar is taken after an overnight fast, which gives a steadier baseline. Doctors choose between them depending on the question.
Can a random blood sugar test diagnose diabetes?
A clearly high random result together with classic symptoms can support a diagnosis. Otherwise, doctors usually confirm it with a fasting blood sugar, a two-hour test or an HbA1c.
Should I eat before a random blood sugar test?
There is no need to change what you eat. Eat as you normally would, and let the collector know when you last ate or had anything sweet to drink.
