What this test is for
Sugar in urine
This test checks whether glucose (sugar) is present in your urine. Normally the kidneys keep glucose in the blood, so little or none reaches the urine; it spills over when blood sugar is high or, less often, when the kidneys handle glucose differently. It is a simple check, but blood tests are used to diagnose and monitor diabetes.
Why a doctor may order it
- As a simple check for high blood sugar alongside other urine tests
- Thirst, passing urine often or unexplained weight loss
- During pregnancy, as part of routine urine checks
- Together with a blood sugar test when diabetes control is being reviewed
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
You can eat and drink as usual unless your doctor has asked for this sample alongside a fasting blood test. Collect a midstream sample in the sterile container provided, preferably the first urine of the morning. Keep taking your usual medicines, and tell your doctor if you take a diabetes medicine that works by passing sugar into the urine.

What the results can mean
The report shows whether glucose is absent or present, often graded by amount. Sugar in the urine usually means blood sugar has been high, often because of diabetes, but it can also occur in pregnancy and with some kidney conditions, and it is expected with a group of diabetes medicines called SGLT2 inhibitors. A negative result does not rule out diabetes. Your doctor will interpret the result with blood tests such as fasting sugar or HbA1c.
What's included
One test: Urine Sugar (Urine Glucose), from one urine sample.

- Random Blood Sugar (RBS)A random blood sugar test measures the glucose in your blood at any time of day, whenever you last ate.
- HbA1c (Glycated Haemoglobin)HbA1c measures how much of the haemoglobin in your red blood cells has glucose (sugar) attached to it.
- Urine KetonesKetones, diabetes & fasting৳150
- Urine Routine Examination (Urine R/E)A urine routine examination, also called urinalysis, looks at your urine in three ways: its appearance, its chemistry (such as protein, sugar and acidity) and, under a microscope, any cells, crystals or bacteria.
Questions people ask
Can urine sugar diagnose diabetes?
No. Sugar only appears in the urine once blood sugar is quite high, and it can be present for other reasons. Diabetes is diagnosed with blood tests such as fasting blood sugar or HbA1c.
Why is there sugar in my urine when I take my diabetes medicine?
Some diabetes medicines, called SGLT2 inhibitors or gliflozins, work by helping the kidneys pass extra sugar into the urine. With these medicines, sugar in the urine is expected.
Is sugar in the urine normal in pregnancy?
Small amounts can appear in pregnancy because the kidneys handle glucose differently. Your doctor may still check your blood sugar to look for gestational diabetes.
