What this test is for
Blood sugar after a meal
This test measures the glucose in your blood two hours after you start a normal breakfast. After a meal, blood sugar rises and insulin should bring it back down within a couple of hours. A high result at this point shows the body is not handling sugar from food well, which can be an early sign of diabetes, and it helps your doctor check diabetes control after meals.
Why a doctor may order it
- To check how your body handles sugar after a meal
- To help diagnose diabetes, often together with a fasting blood sugar
- To see whether diabetes treatment is controlling sugar after meals
- If fasting sugar is normal but diabetes is still suspected
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
Eat your usual breakfast and note the time you start eating; the sample is taken two hours from that moment. Until then, do not eat or snack, drink only plain water, and avoid exercise. Take your usual medicines as your doctor has advised.

- Blood sample
- How it works
- Book the visit for two hours after you plan to start breakfast. The collector arrives at that time and takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm, which takes a few minutes.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
The report shows your blood glucose next to the laboratory's reference range for a two-hour sample. A higher value suggests the body is slow to clear sugar after food, which can point to prediabetes or diabetes. Timing matters, so a sample taken too early or too late can be misleading. Your doctor will interpret the result, usually alongside a fasting sugar or HbA1c.

Questions people ask
Are the two hours counted from the start or the end of breakfast?
From the time you start eating. Note the time of your first bite and book the sample for two hours later.
Can I drink tea after breakfast before the test?
Any tea should be part of your breakfast. After that, have only plain water until the sample is taken, as sweet or milky drinks, snacks and fruit can change the result.
Should I eat a special breakfast for this test?
No. Eat a normal, everyday breakfast so the result reflects your usual sugar levels. Avoid an unusually light or unusually heavy meal.
How is this different from a glucose tolerance test?
In this test you eat a normal breakfast. In a glucose tolerance test you fast and then drink a measured glucose drink, which gives a more standardised result.
