What this test is for
Blood group & Rh type
This test finds your ABO blood group (A, B, AB or O) and whether you are Rh (D) positive or negative. Your blood group depends on markers called antigens on the surface of your red blood cells, and it normally stays the same for life. Knowing it is important before a blood transfusion or an operation, and during pregnancy.
Why a doctor may order it
- Before a blood transfusion or an operation
- Early in pregnancy, to check whether the mother is Rh negative
- Before donating blood
- For your medical records, a pre-employment check or premarital screening
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
Nothing special is needed before this test, and you do not need to fast. Eat and drink as usual and keep taking your regular medicines. If you have had a blood transfusion in the last few months, tell the collector.
At home
- Sample
- Blood sample
- How it works
- A trained sample collector comes to your home and takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm. It takes a few minutes, and the tube is carefully labelled with your details, since a blood group result must be matched to the right person.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
The report states your ABO group and Rh type, for example 'O positive' or 'A negative'. There is no healthy or unhealthy blood group. If you are Rh negative and pregnant, your doctor will explain the extra care needed to protect the baby. Before any transfusion, the blood bank will still do its own grouping and cross-match for safety.

Questions people ask
Why does Rh type matter in pregnancy?
If a mother is Rh negative and her baby is Rh positive, her body can make antibodies that may affect this or a later pregnancy. Doctors can usually prevent this with an injection, so knowing your Rh type early matters.
Can my blood group change?
Your blood group normally stays the same throughout life. Rare exceptions include after a bone marrow transplant.
Which blood group is the universal donor?
O negative red cells can be given to people of any ABO and Rh group in an emergency, which is why O negative is called the universal donor. People with AB positive blood are known as universal recipients.
Is a new blood group test needed before a transfusion?
Yes. Even if you know your group, the blood bank tests your blood again and cross-matches it with the donor blood before any transfusion, for safety.
