What it is used for
Tadalafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction, when a man cannot get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. It is also used to relieve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), such as a weak stream or needing to pass urine often. Under specialist care, some products are used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, a type of high blood pressure in the lungs.
How it works
Tadalafil blocks an enzyme called PDE5, which relaxes smooth muscle and increases blood flow. In the penis this helps an erection happen with sexual stimulation, and it also relaxes muscle in the prostate, bladder and lung blood vessels.
