What it is used for
Sertraline is used to treat depression and to help prevent it coming back. It is also used for anxiety-related conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder. In some countries it is also approved for severe premenstrual mood symptoms (premenstrual dysphoric disorder).
How it works
Sertraline increases the amount of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain, by slowing how quickly nerve cells take it back up. Over several weeks this can improve mood and reduce anxiety.

Common side effects
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, headache, trouble sleeping or drowsiness, dizziness, sweating, dry mouth and sexual problems. Many of these ease after the first few weeks.

Warnings
- It usually takes a few weeks to start working. Do not stop suddenly, as this can cause dizziness, anxiety and flu-like symptoms; your doctor will reduce it gradually.
- Get help straight away if you have thoughts of harming yourself, particularly in the early weeks or after a change in treatment.
- Seek urgent help for agitation, high temperature, sweating, shaking, muscle twitching and a fast heartbeat, which may be serotonin syndrome.
- Alcohol can make side effects worse and may worsen low mood.
