What it is used for
Favipiravir is an antiviral medicine first approved in Japan for new or re-emerging pandemic influenza, for use when other flu antivirals are not effective. During the COVID-19 pandemic it was used in several countries to treat mild to moderate illness. Larger studies have not clearly shown that it helps people with COVID-19, so whether to use it is a decision for a doctor.
How it works
Favipiravir blocks an enzyme called RNA polymerase that some viruses need to copy themselves, which slows the spread of the virus in the body.

Common side effects
Possible side effects include raised uric acid levels in the blood, diarrhoea, nausea and changes in liver blood tests. Raised uric acid can trigger gout in people prone to it.

- Take it only when a doctor prescribes it; do not use it to self-treat a cold, flu or COVID-19.
- Seek urgent help if breathing becomes difficult or you develop a serious allergic reaction.
