What this test is for
Pregnancy test
This test looks for human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), a hormone made by the developing placenta soon after a fertilised egg implants in the womb. hCG passes into the urine, so finding it is a sign of pregnancy. The test gives a positive or negative result and is reliable from the first day of a missed period.
Why a doctor may order it
- If your period is late or missed
- If you have early pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, tender breasts or tiredness
- Before an X-ray, an operation or a medicine that may not be safe in pregnancy
- To confirm a positive home pregnancy test
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
Use the first urine of the morning if you can, as it is the most concentrated and gives a more reliable result, especially early in pregnancy. Avoid drinking a lot of water just before collecting, as this dilutes the urine. Fasting is not needed for this test.

What the results can mean
A positive result means hCG was found and you are very likely to be pregnant. A negative result can mean you are not pregnant, or that it is too early for hCG to show in the urine; if your period still does not come, testing again after a few days or a blood hCG test can help. Your doctor will confirm the result and advise on next steps, such as antenatal care.

Questions people ask
How early can a urine pregnancy test detect pregnancy?
Most urine tests are reliable from the first day of a missed period. Testing earlier may give a false negative because hCG levels are still low.
What is the difference between a urine and a blood pregnancy test?
A urine test shows whether hCG is present. A blood test (beta hCG) measures the exact amount and can detect pregnancy a little earlier, so doctors also use it to follow early pregnancy.
Can a pregnancy test be positive when I am not pregnant?
It is uncommon. It can happen soon after a miscarriage, with some fertility medicines that contain hCG, or rarely with certain medical conditions. Your doctor can check with a blood test or a scan.
