What this package is for

Tests before anaesthesia

This package gathers the routine tests an anaesthetist usually wants to see before giving an anaesthetic. It checks your blood count, blood group and Rh type, how quickly your blood clots (PT with INR), kidney function with creatinine and urea, and body salts. It also includes a rapid screen for hepatitis B, a test for hepatitis C and a routine urine examination, so the team can judge whether you are fit for anaesthesia and plan it safely.

Who this package is for

  • You are due for a planned operation or procedure under general or spinal anaesthesia
  • Your anaesthetist has asked for these tests at your pre-anaesthetic assessment
  • You have kidney disease or take blood thinners and your team wants up-to-date results
  • To make sure your blood group is known in case blood is needed during surgery

How to prepare

Fasting: Not needed.

These tests do not need fasting, so eat and drink as usual on the collection day; the fasting before your anaesthetic is separate and your team will explain it. Collect the first urine of the morning in the container provided. Keep taking your regular medicines, and make sure your anaesthetist knows about any blood thinners, diabetes medicines or herbal remedies you use.

How it works
The collector takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm and collects the urine container you have prepared, all at your home. The blood draw takes a few minutes. Booking well ahead of your operation date helps make sure the results are ready for your assessment.
Report
Within 24 hours of collection.

What the results can mean

Your anaesthetist looks for problems that could affect a safe anaesthetic, such as anaemia, slow clotting, reduced kidney function or a potassium level outside the range. A reactive hepatitis screen is confirmed with further tests. If something needs attention, the operation may be delayed while it is treated, or the plan may be adjusted. Your anaesthetist or doctor will interpret the results as part of your assessment.

Questions people ask

What is a pre-anaesthetic check-up?

It is an assessment by an anaesthetist before surgery to review your health, medicines, allergies and test results. Its aim is to lower the risks of anaesthesia and plan the safest approach for you.

Why are urea and creatinine checked before anaesthesia?

They show how well your kidneys are working. The kidneys clear many anaesthetic and pain medicines from the body, so reduced kidney function can change which medicines the team chooses.

What is a rapid HBsAg card test (ICT)?

ICT is a rapid card test. It gives a quick screening result for hepatitis B surface antigen, and a positive result is confirmed with a laboratory method such as ELISA.

Why is a urine test part of a pre-anaesthetic check?

A routine urine examination can show an untreated urine infection, sugar or protein. These may need attention before surgery and can point to diabetes or kidney problems.
