What this test is for
Fertility & menopause hormone
FSH is a hormone released by the pituitary gland. In women it helps eggs develop in the ovaries each month, and in men it supports sperm production in the testes. Measuring it helps your doctor look into fertility problems, irregular periods and menopause, and understand whether a problem starts in the ovaries or testes or in the pituitary gland.
Why a doctor may order it
- Difficulty getting pregnant, for either partner
- Irregular or missed periods
- To look for early menopause in younger women whose periods have changed
- A low sperm count in men
- Early or delayed puberty in children
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
You do not need to fast. If you have periods, your doctor may ask for the sample on a particular day of your cycle, often early in the cycle, so book the collection for the day they advise. Tell your doctor if you take hormonal contraception or hormone therapy, as these affect the result.

- Blood sample
- How it works
- Choose a collection day that matches the cycle day your doctor asked for. A trained collector then takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm at home, which takes a few minutes.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
Your FSH is reported with the laboratory's ranges, which differ by sex and, for women, by the phase of the menstrual cycle and menopause. A high FSH can mean the ovaries or testes are not responding well, as happens naturally at menopause, while a low FSH can point to a problem with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus. One reading is not a diagnosis; your doctor will interpret it together with LH, oestradiol and other tests.

Questions people ask
Can an FSH test confirm menopause?
FSH rises around menopause, but it can go up and down during perimenopause, so one result cannot always confirm it. For many women in their mid-forties or older, doctors diagnose menopause from symptoms and period changes instead.
Which day of my cycle should FSH be tested?
It is usually checked early in the menstrual cycle, within the first few days after your period starts. Follow the exact day your doctor recommends.
Why do men have an FSH test?
In men, FSH helps control sperm production. It is checked when there is a low sperm count, often with LH and testosterone, to see whether the problem lies in the testes or the pituitary gland.
How much does a FSH test cost in Dhaka?
With Mukti Health the price is ৳500, and the sample is collected at your home in Dhaka. You see the price again before you confirm the booking in the Mukti Health app.

Yes. Book it in the Mukti Health app and a trained sample collector comes to your home in Dhaka to take the blood sample. You do not need to go to a laboratory.
How long does the FSH report take?
The report is usually ready within 24 hours of the sample being collected.
