What this test is for

Total cholesterol, heart risk

This test measures the total amount of cholesterol in your blood, adding together the 'bad' LDL cholesterol, the 'good' HDL cholesterol and other types. Cholesterol is a fatty substance the body needs to build cells and make hormones, but too much can build up in the artery walls and raise the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is a quick first check, while a full lipid profile gives more detail.

Why a doctor may order it

  • As a quick check of heart and blood vessel risk
  • As part of a routine adult health check-up
  • To follow cholesterol levels during lifestyle changes or treatment
  • If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease

How to prepare

Fasting: Not needed.

This test does not need fasting, so you can eat and drink normally. Keep taking your usual medicines, including any cholesterol medicine, unless your doctor has told you otherwise. If a full lipid profile is booked for the same morning, fast as shown for that test.

At home

How it works
The collector visits you at home and takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm. It takes a few minutes, and there is no need to change your meals around it.
Report
Within 24 hours of collection.

What the results can mean

The report shows your total cholesterol next to the laboratory's reference range. A high level can raise the risk of heart disease over time, but total cholesterol alone does not show how much is 'good' HDL or 'bad' LDL. Your doctor will interpret the result alongside your other risk factors, such as blood pressure, diabetes and smoking, and may ask for a full lipid profile.

What's included

One test: Total Cholesterol, from one blood sample.
