What this test is for
Gut infection & worms
A stool routine examination looks at a small sample of your stool by eye and under a microscope. It checks the colour and consistency and looks for worm eggs, parasites such as Giardia and amoeba, blood cells, pus cells, and undigested fat or food. It helps your doctor find the cause of diarrhoea, tummy pain and other gut problems.
Why a doctor may order it
- If you have diarrhoea, especially if it lasts more than a few days or contains mucus or blood
- If you have tummy pain, bloating or wind
- To look for worms, particularly in children
- If there is concern about poor digestion or absorption of food, or poor growth in a child
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
No fasting is necessary for a stool test. Make sure the sample does not mix with urine, toilet water or soap. Tell your doctor about any recent antibiotics, antacids or deworming medicines, as they can affect what is found.
At home
- Sample
- Stool sample
- How it works
- The collector gives you a clean, dry container. Pass stool onto a clean surface or into a clean potty rather than into the toilet, then transfer a small amount into the container and close it tightly. A fresh sample gives a more accurate result, so try to collect it shortly before the collector's visit.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
The report lists what was seen, such as colour, consistency and any worm eggs, cysts, pus cells, red cells or fat. Parasites or eggs point to a gut infection, pus cells can suggest inflammation or a bacterial infection, and blood cells need follow-up. A single normal sample does not rule out every infection. Your doctor will interpret the report and may ask for repeat samples or a stool culture.

Questions people ask
How do I collect a stool sample from a child?
Use a clean potty or a clean plastic sheet. For a baby, take stool from a fresh nappy, using a part that is not soaked with urine. Transfer a small amount into the container and close it tightly.
Why might I need more than one stool sample?
Parasites and their eggs are not always passed every day. Doctors sometimes ask for samples on separate days to improve the chance of finding them.
What is the difference between stool R/E and stool culture?
Stool R/E looks at the stool under a microscope for parasites, cells and other signs. A stool culture grows bacteria such as Salmonella or Shigella to identify an infection and guide treatment.
