What this test is for
Liver health
SGPT, also called ALT (alanine aminotransferase), is an enzyme found mainly inside liver cells. When liver cells are inflamed or damaged, SGPT leaks into the blood and the level rises. It is a key blood test for spotting liver inflammation from causes such as viral hepatitis, fatty liver, alcohol or medicines.
Why a doctor may order it
- To check for liver inflammation if you have jaundice, nausea or tiredness
- To look for fatty liver, especially with excess weight or diabetes
- To monitor people with hepatitis B or C
- To check the liver during treatment with medicines that can affect it, such as some tuberculosis medicines
- As part of a routine or pre-employment health check
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
Fasting is not necessary for SGPT. Keep taking your usual medicines unless your doctor has advised otherwise, and mention any herbal products or supplements. Very strenuous exercise shortly before the test can raise liver enzyme levels slightly, so it is sensible to avoid it.
At home
- Sample
- Blood sample
- How it works
- A trained sample collector comes to your home and draws a small amount of blood from a vein in your arm. It is quick, usually taking a few minutes.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
The report shows your SGPT next to the laboratory's reference range. A mildly raised level is common and is often linked to fatty liver, alcohol or medicines, while a very high level can suggest acute hepatitis or other sudden liver injury. A normal SGPT does not rule out all liver disease. Your doctor will interpret it with your other liver tests and history.

Questions people ask
What does a high SGPT mean?
It means liver cells are releasing more of this enzyme than usual, usually because of inflammation. Common causes include fatty liver, viral hepatitis, alcohol and some medicines. Your doctor may order further tests to find the cause.
Is SGPT the same as ALT?
Yes. SGPT (serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase) is the older name for ALT (alanine aminotransferase). Both names describe the same enzyme and the same test.
Can SGPT come back to normal?
Often, yes. When the cause is treated or removed, for example through weight loss in fatty liver or avoiding alcohol, SGPT often falls. Your doctor may repeat the test to follow it.
