What this test is for
Rubella (German measles) immunity
Rubella, also called German measles, is usually a mild viral illness with a rash and fever. However, infection in early pregnancy can cause miscarriage or serious problems in the baby, such as deafness and eye or heart defects. This test measures IgG antibodies, which show immunity from vaccination or a past infection, so it tells a woman whether she is protected before or during pregnancy.
Why a doctor may order it
- Before planning a pregnancy, to check immunity
- As part of early pregnancy checks
- When you are unsure whether you were vaccinated against rubella
- After contact with rubella, usually together with an IgM test
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
No special preparation is needed. If you know your vaccination history, or had a rubella vaccine recently, tell your doctor.

What the results can mean
A positive IgG result usually means you are immune to rubella, from vaccination or a past infection. A negative result means you may not be protected, and your doctor may recommend vaccination before a future pregnancy. A borderline result may need repeating. IgG alone does not show whether an infection is recent, so your doctor will interpret the result and may add an IgM test.
