What this test is for
Phosphate level, bones & kidneys
This test measures phosphate in your blood. Phosphate is a mineral that works with calcium to build strong bones and teeth, and cells use it to produce and store energy. The kidneys remove extra phosphate from the body, so the level helps your doctor look at kidney function, bone health and the hormones that control minerals.
Why a doctor may order it
- To follow people with chronic kidney disease, in whom phosphate can build up
- When a calcium result is abnormal, to help find the cause
- To look into bone pain, softening of the bones or rickets in children
- To check for a parathyroid or vitamin D problem
- To monitor people who are very unwell or being fed again after a long period of poor nutrition
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
Meals and drinks do not need to be avoided before this test. Keep taking your regular medicines unless told otherwise, and mention antacids, phosphate binders or supplements to your doctor as they can alter the level. Drinking some water beforehand can make the blood draw easier.
At home
- Sample
- Blood sample
- How it works
- At home, a trained collector cleans the skin on your arm and draws a small blood sample from a vein with a sterile needle. The process takes a few minutes and you can carry on with your day straight away.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
Your phosphate result is printed next to the laboratory's reference range; children normally have higher levels than adults. A raised phosphate is most often linked to reduced kidney function, while a low level can come from vitamin D deficiency, an overactive parathyroid gland, poor nutrition or heavy alcohol use. Your doctor will interpret it with your calcium, kidney and hormone results.

Questions people ask
Is phosphate the same as phosphorus?
In blood tests the two words are used almost interchangeably. Most phosphorus in the body is present as phosphate, and reports may use either name.
Why is phosphate checked in kidney disease?
Healthy kidneys remove extra phosphate. When they work less well, phosphate can build up, which over time can weaken bones and affect blood vessels, so it is checked regularly.
Can high phosphate cause symptoms?
High phosphate often causes no symptoms by itself. When it lowers calcium it can cause cramps or tingling, and over years it can contribute to bone and blood vessel problems.
