What this test is for
Pancreas inflammation check
Lipase is an enzyme made by the pancreas to help digest fats. In acute pancreatitis, a sudden inflammation of the pancreas, lipase leaks into the blood and the level rises soon after the pain starts. Lipase is more specific to the pancreas than amylase and stays raised for longer, so many guidelines prefer it as the blood test for pancreatitis.
Why a doctor may order it
- To look for acute pancreatitis in someone with severe upper abdominal pain and vomiting
- When the pain started a day or more ago and amylase may already be falling
- To help tell pancreatitis apart from other causes of abdominal pain
- For people with gallstones, heavy alcohol use or very high triglycerides who develop abdominal pain
How to prepare
Fasting: Not needed.
There is no need to fast or change what you eat. Continue your regular medicines unless your doctor advises a change, and let your doctor know if you have had any recent procedure on the stomach, pancreas or bile ducts.
At home
- Sample
- Blood sample
- How it works
- The collector draws a small blood sample from a vein in your arm at your home, which takes a few minutes. Severe, constant pain in the upper abdomen with vomiting needs urgent medical care, so do not wait for a home test in that situation.
- Report
- Within 24 hours of collection.
What the results can mean
A clearly raised lipase in someone with typical pain strongly supports acute pancreatitis. Milder rises can also occur with kidney disease, bowel problems, gallbladder disease and some other conditions. In long-standing (chronic) pancreatitis, lipase may be normal because the damaged pancreas makes less enzyme. Your doctor will interpret the result with your symptoms, examination and often a scan.
What's included

Questions people ask
What causes pancreatitis?
Gallstones and heavy alcohol use are the most common causes. Very high triglycerides, high calcium levels, some medicines and injury can also cause it.
How long does lipase stay high after pancreatitis?
Lipase usually stays raised for longer than amylase after an attack, which makes it useful if you see a doctor a few days after the pain began.
Can lipase be high without pancreatitis?
Yes. Kidney disease, some bowel and gallbladder conditions and certain medicines can cause mild rises. Your doctor will decide whether the result fits pancreatitis.
